While Aliko Dangote retains his position as the continent’s wealthiest man with a net worth of $30 billion, his fortune did not appreciate at the same rate as Rupert’s.
Dangote commenced 2025 with a net worth of $28.1 billion, which subsequently increased to $30 billion, indicating a year-on-year gain of $1.9 billion.
Conversely, as previously stated, Rupert began the year with $13.7 billion and concluded it with $19.1 billion, demonstrating a year-over-year growth of $5.4 billion, the highest recorded among African billionaires during the fiscal year.
However, entering the new year, the South African billionaire is positioned even closer to that milestone than he was at his highest point last year.
According to the Bloomberg Index, Johann Rupert’s current net worth is $19.7 billion, placing him $300 million short of the $20 billion threshold.
The index also reveals that he has a last valuation change of +$241 million, and a year-to-date growth of +$189 million.
Johann Rupert’s recent moves
Last month, the South African billionaire declared plans to consolidate his influence in the private healthcare sector.
Remgro, Rupert’s investment holding company, and Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) also acquired complete ownership of Mediclinic’s Southern African operations, while Investment Holding Limited S.à r.l. (IHL), MSC’s wholly owned subsidiary would take full control of the Hirslanden operations in Switzerland.
With 50 facilities, 8,991 beds, and more than 21,400 workers, Mediclinic Southern Africa is the third-largest private healthcare provider in the area.
Richemont, Rupert’s holding company for luxury items, had performed admirably during the year.
Following record-breaking jewelry sales that boosted profitability, the company reported $12.3 billion in half-year sales.
For the first half of its fiscal year, the company reported a 10% growth in sales at constant exchange rates and a 5% increase at actual rates, according to the report.
Sales increased to €10.62 billion ($12.33 billion) from €10.08 billion ($11.71 billion).
