According to recent UNESCO data, Africa has significantly improved its school enrollment rates. Despite this, the continent faces a foundational learning crisis as many children struggle with basic literacy and numeracy. In fact, nearly 90% of students cannot read a simple 150-word text by age 10. Through her advocacy organization, Human Capital Africa (HCA), former Nigerian education minister Oby Ezekwesili is working to improve foundational literacy in Africa. Ezekwesili believes the key to resolving the crisis is to empower teachers through better remuneration and training. Beyond this, HCA is also driving continent-wide advocacy to solve the problem. Other initiatives seeking to improve Africa’s foundational literacy include Teaching at the Right Level Africa (TaRL Africa), which aims to overhaul the learning curriculum on the continent.
