Angola’s former first daughter Isabel dos Santos has criticized UK sanctions that froze her assets and imposed a travel ban, describing the allegations of corruption as unfounded. The UK government accused Dos Santos, once Africa’s richest woman, of embezzling $442 million during her tenure at Angola’s state-owned oil company, Sonangol. However, Dos Santos claims the sanctions lack due process and are politically motivated. She also disputes the legitimacy of the evidence that Angolan authorities used to obtain the original freezing order, alleging that it included a falsified passport. The UK’s sanctions follow years of scrutiny, beginning with the 2020 “Luanda Leaks” exposé, which detailed alleged financial misconduct. Despite losing her billionaire status and being subject to an Interpol Red Notice, Dos Santos insists she contributed significantly to Angola’s economy. She also stated that she is committed to serving her country, potentially through political leadership.
