Africa’s Tourism Boom

South Africa welcomed 8.92 million visitors in 2024, reaffirming its status as one of Africa’s leading travel destinations. African tourists accounted for 76% of total arrivals, with Zimbabwe remaining the top source market, contributing 2.18 million visitors.

Beyond the African continent, South Africa also attracted a growing number of tourists from Asia and West Africa. In particular, 41,651 Chinese tourists and 36,656 Ghanaian tourists explored the country’s vibrant cities, game reserves, and scenic coastal routes.

As Africa’s tourism industry continues to grow, these figures highlight the continent’s increasing appeal to both regional and international travellers.

Morocco Breaks Records

Morocco also set a new tourism record in 2024, welcoming 17.4 million tourists—a 20% increase compared to the previous year, according to the country’s Ministry of Tourism.

Notably, nearly half of these visitors were Moroccans living abroad, reflecting strong connections between the diaspora and their homeland.

Tourism plays a crucial role in Morocco’s economy, contributing approximately 7% to the nation’s GDP and serving as a key source of employment and foreign currency.

The Ministry of Tourism noted in a statement that Morocco’s tourism numbers have surpassed expectations by two years ahead of schedule.

The country now aims to attract 26 million tourists by 2030, coinciding with its role as a co-host of the FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal.

To accommodate this growth, Morocco has expanded flight routes to key tourist markets, promoted new domestic travel destinations, and invested in hotel renovations.

As investments in infrastructure and tourism promotion continue, Africa is well-positioned to become an even greater global travel destination in the years ahead.
