Established in 1960, the Nigerian Armed Forces have grown in capability to be considered West Africa’s most capable military, combining one of the continent’s largest standing forces with extensive operational experience.
The NAF is a tri-service force, comprising the Nigerian Army, the Nigerian Air Force, and the Nigerian Navy. In recent years the Nigerian military has undergone a sustained modernisation drive aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s ability to counter internal insurgencies, combat regional maritime piracy, and contribute to regional stability.
While the NAF continues to face persistent challenges (including corruption, insufficient levels of maintenance, and funding volatility), Nigeria continues to invest heavily in equipment renewal and international partnerships.
This military profile provides a detailed overview of the NAF’s structure, order of battle, defence economy, arms control mechanisms, and external operations, illustrating how Africa’s most populous state leverages its military to maintain strategic influence across the Gulf of Guinea and the wider region.
