While traditionally linked with large international powers, their significance is increasingly acknowledged by states with extensive marine borders, especially African countries.

As Africa grows as a major actor in global trade, resource management, and geopolitics, the need for strong maritime security, particularly submarine capabilities, cannot be underestimated.

Submarines are an effective deterrent in modern naval warfare. Their stealth and ability to remain unnoticed enable governments to project power and protect their sovereignty without escalating confrontations.

Submarines are a strategic asset for African countries, especially those with contested maritime boundaries or significant offshore resources since they help to establish territorial integrity and prevent external invasion.

Furthermore, submarine capacity places African countries as essential actors in regional and worldwide maritime interactions.

It improves their capacity to engage in joint exercises, contribute to peacekeeping operations, and carry out obligations to global maritime security efforts.

The modern maritime landscape is increasingly complex, with threats ranging from terrorism to environmental disasters.

Submarines with modern sonar, communication systems, and armament are critical for detecting and countering these threats.

Their adaptability also enables them to assist in humanitarian missions such as disaster relief and search-and-rescue operations.

With that said, here are the African countries with at least one submarine in 2025, according to Global Firepower.
