Each year, tourism generates trillions of dollars globally, and Africa is steadily increasing its share of that revenue. According to UN Tourism data, international tourist receipts reached $1.74 trillion in 2024, marking a 14% increase from pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

While the world’s biggest tourism earnings are concentrated in the United States, Europe, and parts of Asia, Africa’s tourism sector continues to play a critical role in driving foreign exchange, employment, and economic diversification across the continent.

Tourism receipts are shaped not only by visitor numbers but also by how much travelers spend on accommodation, transport, food, and experiences. From heritage tourism in North Africa to wildlife safaris and beach destinations in sub-Saharan Africa, several countries have emerged as the continent’s top tourism earners.

Below are the African countries that generate the most revenue from international tourism:

1. Egypt — $15.3 billion

Egypt remains Africa’s top tourism earner, generating an estimated $15.3 billion in international tourist receipts in 2024. The country’s tourism appeal is anchored in its unparalleled historical assets, including the Pyramids of Giza, Luxor, and the Nile Valley, as well as Red Sea resort destinations such as Sharm El-Sheikh and Hurghada.

Recent investments in airport infrastructure, hotel capacity, and the long-anticipated Grand Egyptian Museum have helped boost arrivals. Business Insider Africa earlier reported that Egypt recorded a 21% jump to 19 million visitors, according to year-end data released by the government.

2. Morocco — $11.3 billion

Morocco

Morocco earned about $11.3 billion from international tourism in 2024, cementing its position as one of Africa’s most diversified travel destinations.

The country benefits from a mix of cultural tourism in cities like Marrakech and Fez, coastal attractions along the Atlantic, and desert experiences in the Sahara. Strong air connectivity with Europe, political stability, and aggressive tourism promotion have supported growth.

The country has also invested heavily in hospitality and transport infrastructure, boosted by the recently concluded Africa Cup of Nations and preparations for major global events, including the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

Business Insider Africa earlier reported that Morocco recorded about 19.8 million tourist arrivals, representing a 14% increase from 2024, reinforcing tourism’s role as a key pillar of the economy.

3. South Africa — $6.4 billion

South Africa generated roughly $6.4 billion in tourism receipts in 2024, driven by its appeal as a long-haul destination offering wildlife, wine tourism, and vibrant urban centres such as Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Safari tourism, particularly in Kruger National Park and private game reserves, remains a major draw for high-spending visitors.

While challenges such as infrastructure constraints and safety concerns persist, improved flight connectivity and visa reforms have helped support a recovery in visitor numbers. Tourism continues to play a crucial role in employment and the growth of small businesses across the country.

4. Tanzania — $3.9 billion

Tanzania

Tanzania earned an estimated $3.9 billion from tourism in 2024, reflecting the strong global demand for its natural attractions. The country is home to iconic destinations such as Mount Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti National Park, and the beaches of Zanzibar.

Wildlife tourism remains the backbone of the sector, attracting premium international visitors, while beach tourism has continued to grow steadily.

Government efforts to market Tanzania globally and expand aviation links have supported revenue growth. Tourism is a significant contributor to foreign exchange earnings and supports livelihoods across the conservation, hospitality, and transportation sectors.

5. Tunisia — $2.9 billion

Tunisia recorded around $2.9 billion in international tourism receipts in 2024, benefiting from a rebound in visitor arrivals following years of volatility.

The country’s tourism offering combines Mediterranean beach resorts, historical sites such as Carthage and El Djem, and desert experiences in the south. Proximity to Europe and competitive pricing have helped Tunisia attract budget and mid-range travellers.
