Africa EV Mobility Expo Kenya 2025 Powers Up the Future of Green Transport
The Africa EV Mobility Expo Kenya 2025, East Africa’s flagship showcase for electric mobility and sustainable transport, brought together more than 100 global and regional industry leaders at The Edge Convention Centre in Nairobi.
Hosted by MIE Events DMCC in partnership with Global Exhibitions Inc and supported by the Ministry of Roads and Transport, the event highlighted breakthrough technologies reshaping mobility across the continent.
Kenya Accelerates Toward Large-Scale EV Adoption
Energy Principal Secretary Alex Wachira, represented by State Department of Energy Assistant Director Erick Apunda, reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to leading the region in electric mobility.
He announced that the government plans to deploy 10,000 electric vehicle charging stations by 2030, ensuring nationwide accessibility.
Apunda noted that Kenya’s new electric mobility policy—currently before Parliament- proposes tax changes aimed at lowering the cost of EVs and encouraging wider adoption.
Independent EV expert Eng. Michael Muchiri echoed this need. He pointed out that electric vehicles remain two to three times more expensive than fuel-powered cars due to heavy taxation.
To address this, experts recommend beginning with local assembly of EVs using completely knocked-down kits, a move expected to create jobs and lower production costs.
Apunda added that the National Treasury offers tax concessions to companies assembling at least 30% of their EVs locally, including a 50% tax reduction.
The long-term goal is to industrialize the sector by manufacturing key components locally and reducing dependence on imports.
Kenya is well-positioned for this transition. With over 90% renewable electricity generation, a growing manufacturing base, and supportive government incentives, the country is emerging as a continental leader in EV innovation.
As the expo concluded, it stood out as a high-energy platform connecting innovators, investors, policymakers, and manufacturers, right at the moment when Africa is gearing up for wide-scale electrification.
