Adobe announced on Tuesday it’s bringing its popular design and editing software Photoshop to mobile, starting with iOS. The company plans to launch a Photoshop for Android app later this year.

With the new Photoshop for iPhone app, users can access both free and paid features through a mobile-friendly design that’s accessible on the go. The app offers a similar set of editing tools as the desktop version, including layering and masking, but optimized for use on mobile screens. Photoshop for iPhone also integrates with Photoshop on the web, for a fee.

For users who want access to the app’s premium features and Photoshop on the web, Adobe launched a $7.99 monthly subscription plan. All current Photoshop paid plans already include access to Photoshop on mobile, Adobe says.

By bringing Photoshop to mobile, Adobe is looking to attract new users, especially younger ones who are used to using their phones for creative purposes.

In its announcement, Adobe says it built the app “from the ground up to welcome a new generation of image and design enthusiasts to the limitless potential of Photoshop.”

The app also allows the company to compete with popular editing apps, such as Snapseed, Picsart, and even Canva. mobile.

As for people who already use Photoshop on desktop, the web, and iPad, the new app allows them to make edits anywhere and work across devices.

Free users can combine and blend images with Photoshop’s core tools, including selections, layers, and masks. They can also remove, recolor, or replace parts of an image with the “Tap Select” tool. Plus, they can access removal tools like the “Spot Healing Brush,” and utilize generative AI tools powered by Adobe Firefly, including “Generative Fill” and “Generative Expand.”

In addition, they can access hundreds of thousands of free Adobe Stock assets. Free users can also navigate across workflows thanks to a direct integration with Adobe Express, Adobe Fresco, and Adobe Lightroom.

Paid users can transition from Photoshop mobile to Photoshop on the web to allow for added precision and control. They’ll also get access to additional Firefly-powered AI tools, including “Generate Similar” and “Reference Image.”

Plus, they’ll gain access to more than 20,000 fonts, along with the ability to import additional options.

Other premium features include “Object Select,” which lets you make precise selections, and “Magic Wand,” a tool that allows you to isolate objects and make targeted adjustments. Paid users can also remove distractions with “Remove Tool,” hide unwanted objects with “Clone Stamp” and fill portions of an image with “Content-Aware Fill.”

They have the option to lighten or darken parts of an image, too, and use advanced blend modes that allow them to control transparency and add unique styles to images.

“We spent a lot of time talking to creatives and creators, especially the new generation of creators who are very comfortable with phones, and tried to understand their unique use cases on mobile devices,” said Shambhavi Kadam, senior director of product management at Adobe Photoshop, during a briefing with TechCrunch. “And we took that feedback and built it into the product to make sure that it worked really well for these users.”

Kadam said that early testers of the app used it to create digital art, mood boards, podcast art, album cover art, fashion lookbooks, video thumbnails, memes, and more.

Photoshop on iPhone is generally available worldwide in the Apple App Store today.
