The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has issued a resolution prohibiting the drilling of new groundwater wells in designated areas across the emirate, as part of ongoing efforts to preserve Abu Dhabi’s groundwater reserves.

Developed in coordination with relevant authorities, the resolution falls under Law No. (5) of 2016, which regulates groundwater management in Abu Dhabi and authorises the EAD to establish prohibited zones while issuing guidelines to maintain groundwater quality and regulate consumption.

EAD issues critical resolution to safeguard Abu Dhabi’s groundwater resources

The resolution outlines specific activities permitted within the designated areas, including drilling, maintenance, and deepening of wells.

It also details obligations for well owners to comply with licensing requirements stipulated in the existing law and its executive regulations.

The agency confirmed it is working with strategic partners to implement the resolution through systematic procedures designed to achieve the desired environmental protection objectives.
