Absa Strengthens Retail Strategy with Appointment of Sitoyo Lopokoiyit

Absa has appointed Sitoyo Lopokoiyit as Chief Executive: Personal and Private Banking, effective 1 April 2026.

Lopokoiyit is a seasoned industry leader. He brings strong expertise in financial services and telecommunications. He also has deep experience in customer value propositions and large-scale business transformation.

His appointment marks a key step in Absa’s strategy. The bank continues to focus on integrated, customer-centric solutions across its Personal and Private Banking franchise. At the same time, it aims to unlock new growth opportunities.

Lopokoiyit most recently served as Managing Director of M-PESA Africa. He also held the role of Chief Financial Services Officer at Safaricom. In these positions, he led the strategy and growth of Africa’s largest fintech platform.

He brings more than 12 years of fintech experience. He played a central role in scaling M-PESA into a continental powerhouse. The platform now serves over 56 million customers and more than 5 million businesses.

Absa Strengthens Retail Strategy with Appointment of Sitoyo Lopokoiyit

He later led M-PESA Africa, a joint venture between Safaricom and Vodacom. In that role, he expanded the platform’s reach across multiple African markets.

Lopokoiyit joined Safaricom in 2011. Since then, he has held several senior leadership roles, including Head of M-PESA Strategy and Business Development. He also led operations in Tanzania.

He drove major innovations such as the M-PESA Super App and Fuliza. He also secured strategic partnerships with global platforms including PayPal and AliPay.
