Absa Links Sports Investment to Brand Purpose
Absa Bank Kenya Managing Director and CEO Abdi Mohamed said the bank’s continued support for sports reflects its broader purpose.
“At Absa, our purpose is empowering Africa’s tomorrow together, one story at a time. We invest in sports because they showcase excellence, resilience, and possibility. Through this sponsorship, we walk the journey with players, communities, and the wider sports ecosystem while spotlighting Kenya to the world,” said Mohamed.
The Magical Kenya Open forms part of the DP World Tour and ranks among Africa’s most prestigious golf tournaments. Each year, it attracts elite international players, global media attention, and millions of golf fans worldwide.
As a result, the tournament plays a key role in positioning Kenya as a premium sports and tourism destination.
Government Applauds Long-Term Partnership
State Department for Sports Secretary Administration Evans Achoki praised Absa’s consistent sponsorship.
“For more than 15 years, Absa’s support has positioned the bank as the tournament’s largest corporate partner. This partnership has elevated Kenya’s global golfing profile and strengthened its reputation as a leading tourism destination. It demonstrates the power of sport as a driver of economic growth,” said Achoki.
KOGL Chairman Patrick Obath welcomed Absa’s continued support and emphasized the role of partnerships in sustaining global-standard events.
“Absa Bank’s consistent sponsorship has transformed the Magical Kenya Open into one of Kenya’s leading sports tourism events. Private sector support strengthens our ability to host competitive global events while showcasing Kenya’s infrastructure, hospitality, and sporting excellence,” said Obath.
He added that the tournament has evolved into an inclusive family and lifestyle event while continuing to elevate local talent.
This year’s tournament has attracted 144 elite golfers from across the world. The field includes 10 Kenyan professional and amateur players and the past five winners of the Magical Kenya Open.
Players will compete over four rounds for a KES 348.3 million (USD 5 million) prize purse. Kenyan professionals in the field include Njoroge Kibugu, Dismas Indiza, and Greg Snow, alongside golfers from 25 countries.
As part of the sponsorship, Absa will run the Beat the Pro challenge. Junior golfers will compete alongside professionals at a selected hole to land closest to the pin.
Each junior winner will receive a fully funded Absa Junior Account worth KES 50,000, supporting early financial inclusion and talent development.
Beyond the Tournament
Mohamed noted that golf reflects values Absa strongly believes in.
“Golf represents discipline, patience, and long-term commitment. By investing in the Magical Kenya Open, we support more than a tournament. We back local players and affirm that Kenyan stories belong on the global stage,” he said.
