The future of US democracy stands at a pretty precarious crossroads right now, with political instability and crypto fear sort of spreading throughout America. Cultural historian James F. Jones Jr. has drawn some rather sobering parallels between our current situation and the Watergate scandal, suggesting that the future of US democracy might be facing even greater threats today than it did back then.

A Nation in Crisis

The future of US governance has become a topic of intense debate nationwide these days. Jones mentions that people are constantly asking him about the state of our democracy.

Jones stated:

“The single most repeated question I’ve been asked of late as a cultural historian has easily been: ‘Have you ever been as worried about the future of the United States?’”

Political risk and instability in America have reached some pretty alarming levels, reminiscent of the Watergate era when citizens were anxiously following each and every revelation about Nixon’s administration on their TVs and radios.

A Powerful Historical Parallel

New York’s Cathedral of Saint John the Divine actually held a remarkable service four days before Nixon’s resignation. This solemn gathering addressed the future of US democracy during a time of national crisis.

Jones described the scene:

“The lights were dimmed even more; one blazing spotlight shone upon a huge American flag draped from the ceiling of one of the columns, and my friend Alec Wyton, the beloved organist and Master of Choristers at Saint John the Divine, played ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ largo, as if a funeral dirge.”

Today’s Greater Peril

Crypto fear and economic uncertainty now sort of compound our political challenges in multiple ways. The future of US stability seems increasingly uncertain as Jones draws a stark comparison to our current political situation.

Jones wrote:

“Trump makes the heinous Nixon look like Mother Theresa. And what is truly terrifying at this fragile moment for our cherished democracy is the utter cowardice of those Republicans now sitting in the congressional chairs once occupied by the likes of Goldwater, Scott, and Rhodes.”

A Call for Action

The future of US democracy really depends on civic engagement and citizen action right now. Jones urgently pleads for Americans to get involved.

Jones urged:

“We need a second service for the state of the nation at every church, temple, and mosque all over the country. We all need to pray for the future of the United States and then act accordingly.”

Recent demonstrations across the country offer ‘some glimmer that we might finally confront our present ‘nightmare,’ to borrow from Gerald Ford’s public announcement all those years ago. The future of US democracy honestly requires a national reckoning similar to what occurred during the Watergate crisis of the 1970s.
