Maxar Intelligence has signed a deal with the US Army to provide the latest phase of its immersive training software.

The company was awarded the Phase 4 contract of the One World Terrain (OWT) prototype, which creates virtual 3D terrain that the army uses for training.

The OWT Phase 4 will see Maxar focus on delivering more advanced virtual landscapes for modeling and simulation.

It is a key component of the force’s Synthetic Training Environment, a program that combines virtual settings with live training for more advanced mission rehearsals.

Maxar USG General Manager Susanne Hake said the deal underlines the company’s role in providing more sophisticated training systems to the army.

“This latest award reflects the unique value of our 3D geospatial data for military simulation use cases. Our data, derived from our Precision3D product, offers an extremely accurate 3D representation of Earth, including real textures and superior accuracy of 3 m in all dimensions,” she said.

The tech group has been involved with the OWT initiative since 2019.

The Army’s Virtual Push

The US Army has established various programs to incorporate virtual and augmented reality into the force.

Recently, it began testing VR goggles and rifle replicas under the STE program for indoor training at the Close Combat Tactical Trainer hub in Fort Cavazos, Texas.
