Defense companies Saab and MBDA have signed a letter of intent to collaborate on Sweden and France’s anti-tank and air defense capability development.

Their cooperation in the anti-tank sector will focus primarily on improving beyond line-of-sight firing for the Akeron MP, France’s fifth-generation anti-tank guided missile system.

The capabilities were chosen as the focus of the agreement due to its integral roles in the context of high-intensity conflicts.

The agreement comes after French President Emmanuel Macron‘s state visit to Sweden to begin a strategic partnership aimed at promoting the nations’ defense partnership.

“The closeness between Saab and MBDA is reflected in our co-operation over many years, and the deepening and broadening of that through these Letters of Intent is most welcome,” Saab President and CEO Michael Johansson said.

A Long-Standing Partnership

Saab and MBDA have developed a close partnership over the years, focusing on developing newer technologies.

One of their recent projects was integrating MBDA’s Common Anti-Air Modular Missiles into Royal Swedish Navy ships, as well as incorporating Saab’s Giraffe radar system into Northrop Grumman’s Integrated Air and Missile Defence Battle Command System for the US Army.
