Mozambique is set to implement a tax on the digital economy starting next year. This move is aimed at addressing tax administration challenges and bolstering government revenue.
Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance, Carla Louveira, emphasized the substantial global impact on the national tax system, particularly in relation to digital transactions encompassing e-commerce, mobile wallet operations, and the oversight of both domestic and international financial activities.
During the opening of the Scientific Conference of the Mozambique Tax Authority, Louveira revealed a specialized unit for digital economy taxation within the Tax Authority.
A preliminary trial of this taxation concept is slated for November, focusing on regulating and taxing online transactions within the tourism sector. Louveira highlighted, “We are currently in an era of rapid transformation in the realm of information and communications technology, and the digital economy plays a central role.”
