The European Union and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have pledged to provide internet access to 1,300 Kenyan schools in underserved areas.

This initiative is part of the GIGA program, a collaboration between UNICEF and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) with the goal of connecting every school to the Internet by 2030. It is financed by a grant of 9.8 million euros from the EU. The institution also intends to mobilize 9.9 million euros to digitize the country’s technical and vocational education centers.

This funding is part of the European Union’s “Global Gateway” investment strategy, which aims to advance the dual digital and green transition and provide reliable, sustainable connections to partner countries. In Kenya, the digital component aims to increase digital connectivity, provide support for digital skills, and ensure open and inclusive digital governance.

The project will support the Kenyan government’s stated vision of putting digital technology at the service of the country’s socio-economic development. The executive sector has planned several investments in partnership with the private sector to make Kenya a benchmark for digital transformation in Africa by 2027.
