Dada Khanyisa (they/them) is a renowned multimedia artist from Umzimkhulu, South Africa. In collaboration with the Johannesburg Art Gallery, they will present an exciting body of work titled “Cape Town” on August 26, 2023. Dada Khanyisa carries the vibrant spirit of their homeland in their artistic journey, which will be visible in this exhibition. The highly anticipated show promises a captivating voyage into the essence of Khanyisa’s experiences.

Khanyisa’s art encapsulates the magic within the mundane, a fascination he eloquently expresses. This unique perspective drives Dada’s work, creating vibrant 3D portraits. These portraits capture figures in the intimate theater of their lives – engaging, arguing, alone, and together.

Khanyisa’s artistic journey is marked by a relentless commitment to engaging with the surroundings and channeling each experience into transformative expressions. From their roots in Umzimkhulu to growing up in Johannesburg, Dada’s trajectory encapsulates a journey of exploration, growth, and artistic revelation.

“I enjoy focusing on what people neglect or take for granted – their daily tasks and what was part of their growing experience,” he states in his interview with Avante Art.

Khanyisa’s artistic approach is a convergence of the ordinary and the extraordinary. Through harnessing everyday materials – glass, plastic, fabric, and wood – they carefully craft masterpieces by infusing them with profound significance. Employing the collage technique, Dada layers these materials with the finesse of a storyteller weaving a tapestry. Dada calls the process ‘nahanjani‘ – a Zulu phrase meaning ‘by whatever means.’

Khanyisa’s inspiration springs from memory and the vibrant world around them. The artist blends personal anecdotes with nods to pop culture, infusing sneakers, and football shirts as symbolic threads within their canvas. This artistic juxtaposition of personal and collective memory underscores the interconnected nature of society’s understanding.

Memory, a reservoir of experiences, becomes Khanyisa’s palette as they masterfully weave these threads into a rich tapestry, reflecting the essence of contemporary life and culture. Dada’s art is a conduit, not just for their narrative, but for a broader, shared understanding of the world.

As the pages of Khanyisa’s artistic journey unfold, their exploration of everyday life takes on a new dimension. Dada invites us to pause, reflect, and find beauty in the ordinary through art. With each stroke, Khanyisa crafts a narrative that transcends boundaries and resonates with a universal human connection.

Dada Khanyisa’s “Cape Town” exhibition is on view at the Johannesburg Art Gallery. Witness the transformative power of their art.
