From Farm Dream to Thriving Natural Foods Business

From a young age, Dorcas Katei imagined herself as a farmer. She grew up in Mutula, Machakos County, where she developed a love for the land. She dreamed of growing food and feeding communities with natural produce.

However, as she grew older, the dream felt distant. She did not own land. She also could not afford to lease any. Meanwhile, life seemed to move faster than her farming ambitions.

Instead of giving up, she chose a different route. If she could not grow food herself, she would source and refine it. More importantly, she would deliver it to people who value natural living.

That idea led to the birth of Tei Cereals & Spices in Syokimau. The business offers natural spices, cereals, and supplements. Her products target customers seeking healthier options for meals, skin, and overall wellbeing.

Two years later, the journey has tested her resilience. She has learned patience and discipline. She now understands that building a business takes time.

“The mistake most people make is expecting a business to sustain their lifestyle immediately,” she says. “It takes focus and consistency.”

Finding Support and Growing with Purpose

As the business grew, Dorcas needed guidance. Her sister introduced her to the KCB Foundation 2Jiajiri Programme. At first, she missed the opportunity. However, her sister persisted and shared her contact details. That second chance changed everything.

Through the programme, Dorcas met other young entrepreneurs. As a result, she realised she was not alone. She also gained practical skills to strengthen her enterprise.

The training covered record keeping, market analysis, customer relations, and risk management. In addition, she learned how to assess whether her shop location supported growth.

The biggest impact came from one-on-one coaching. Business coaches visited her shop and reviewed her records. They helped her identify gaps and uncover opportunities. Consequently, she gained the confidence to expand her vision.

Dorcas, an Actuarial Science graduate from KCA University, continues to learn and build. Although challenges remain, she stays motivated by her childhood dream.

“It is not easy, but it is not difficult when you are doing what you love,” she says. “I have followed my passion. Now, I have employed someone and plan to grow Tei Cereals & Spices into a supplier, not just a retail shop.”

Step by step, she is turning her dream into a sustainable business.
