The U.S. personnel are described as technical specialists serving strictly in an advisory and training capacity, and are not involved in combat operations.
“The collaboration will provide access to specialized technical capabilities aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s ability to deter terrorist threats and enhance the protection of vulnerable communities across the country,” the statement said.
The increase in military personnel reflects intensified cooperation as groups such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) continue to threaten security in the northeast.
Training under Nigerian authority
Nigerian troops, working alongside the U.S. advisers, will participate in joint training exercises and intelligence-focused initiatives aimed at improving operational effectiveness in detecting and neutralizing extremist groups.
“All training activities will be conducted under the authority, direction, and control of the Nigerian Government and in close coordination with the Nigerian Armed Forces,” the DHQ emphasized, highlighting Nigeria’s continued sovereignty over its security operations.
The DHQ assured Nigerians that the Armed Forces remain fully committed to degrading and defeating terrorist organizations that threaten national security, and promised continued transparency and timely updates regarding the collaboration.
While the U.S. personnel are strictly advisory, the partnership represents a critical step toward strengthening Nigeria’s military capacity and safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty amid ongoing security challenges.
