The University of Guyana formally installed Ronald Sanders as its 11th chancellor Friday at a ceremony on its Turkeyen campus.
Sanders, a veteran diplomat and advocate for regional integration and small-state interests, emphasized that free education must not compromise academic standards. “A country’s future is not secured by resources alone – it is secured by what its people know, how quickly they learn, and how effectively they apply knowledge,” he said in his inaugural address.
He praised the university’s expansion into digital learning as an equalizing force for the geographically dispersed nation and called for sustained government and private sector investment to maintain quality.
President Irfaan Ali, attending with senior government officials and regional representatives, urged the university to convert research into practical innovation. “The nation requires a national university of strength and stature, one that will supply highly trained graduates across every discipline to propel and sustain our development,” Ali said.
The ceremony included tributes highlighting Sanders’ decades-long career in diplomacy, academia, and public policy.
