Speaking at the 2026 Mining Indaba, President Hakainde Hichilema called for a shift from competition to collaboration, stating “We are stronger together.” He argued that Africa’s prosperity hinges on unified partnerships across the continent.

Hichilema highlighted Zambia’s economic resurgence under his leadership, citing a projected GDP growth of 6.4 percent this year, a sharp reversal from previous contraction. He credited stable governance and key decisions, like the rescue of Konkola Copper Mines, for the recovery.

“The key to success does not lie with governments or mining companies alone,” he said, emphasizing that everyone in the value chain must benefit. He presented mining as a catalyst for national development, noting that sector revenues have helped return 2.3 million children to school.

The president framed inclusion as an economic imperative. “When there is inclusion, there is invested interest. When there is invested interest, there is an insurance policy against negative behavior,” he stated, advocating for profits to reach ordinary citizens.

With Africa central to the global energy transition, Hichilema urged delegates to recognize the continent’s mineral wealth and collective potential. His core message: shared focus and complementarity are the foundations for longer-term success.
