Jamaica has opened a consulate in Lagos, Nigeria – the continent’s largest commercial and technology hub – to deepen diplomatic engagement and serve its growing diaspora in West Africa.
The new mission, led by consul Aima Lijadu, operates under Jamaica’s High Commission in Abuja. It will process passport and citizenship applications for Jamaicans and handle visa requests for Nigerian and other foreign nationals in the region.
The move signals Jamaica’s strategic interest in expanding its footprint beyond traditional diplomatic centers. Lagos offers access to Nigeria’s 250-million-person market and a dynamic tech sector, while also anchoring Jamaica’s outreach to the broader African diaspora – a priority for a nation whose cultural and historical ties to the continent have gained renewed diplomatic emphasis.
