Safaricom Names Five New Millionaires
Safaricom has announced five additional winners of KES 1 million in the Shangwe @25 national consumer promotion.
This brings the total number of millionaires created by the campaign to 20 since its launch last year.
The announcement was made on 22 January 2025 in Nairobi. The latest winners are Moses Elekana, Simon Magika, Faith Nyongesa, Brenda Chelagat, and Nasibo Abdi.
Each winner received KES 1 million. In addition, they were awarded KES 250,000 to fund a community project of their choice.
Campaign Celebrates Shared Prosperity
Speaking during the award ceremony at Kangundo Road Market, Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa said the promotion reflects the company’s commitment to shared prosperity.
He noted that the campaign has transformed lives across the country. Beyond individual winners, it has also supported families, communities, and small businesses.
So far, the initiative has created 20 Kenyan millionaires. Five more winners will be crowned before the promotion ends.
Nairobi Winner Plans to Support Education
One of the winners, Moses Elekana from Nairobi, described the moment as life-changing.
The 55-year-old plumber and father of three said he could not believe his everyday M-PESA transactions had made him a millionaire.
According to Elekana, the money will help him pay college fees for his son. He also plans to complete his shop and improve his family home.
For the community project fund, he chose to support Salvation Army Madegwa Special School in Vihiga County.
The funds will help complete classroom construction and improve learning conditions for children with intellectual disabilities.

Nursing Student to Invest in Education and Maternal Health
Meanwhile, 29-year-old Faith Nyongesa from Lunga Lunga in Kwale County said winning KES 1 million felt unreal.
Initially, she suspected fraud and visited a Safaricom shop in Diani to confirm the news.
Nyongesa is a second-year nursing student. She plans to use the money to further her studies, with the long-term goal of earning a doctorate in nursing.
Additionally, she will use the community project funds to support teen mothers and vulnerable women in Lunga Lunga.
Her focus will be on paying for health insurance to improve access to antenatal care.
Teacher in Kerio Valley Eyes Further Studies
Elsewhere in the Kerio Valley, Brenda Chelagat is still celebrating her win.
The 31-year-old primary school teacher at Kapkono Primary School said the call from Safaricom left her in disbelief.
She plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in education. Currently, she holds a diploma. She also intends to invest in farming, including sheep rearing and cypress tree growing.
Using the community project fund, Chelagat will support Tugumoi Primary School. She plans to help construct proper sanitation facilities, which remain a major challenge at the school.
Brick Maker Plans Family and School Support
In Borabu, Nyamira County, Simon Magika also struggled to believe the news at first. The 25-year-old father of three makes bricks alongside his parents to support his family.
After confirming the win at a Safaricom shop, Magika said he plans to build his mother a decent home.
He also hopes to open a salon for his wife and start a clothing business.
