Though it is one of East Africa’s most experienced and active militaries, the Tanzanian People’s Defence Force (TPDF) has seen its operational capacity undermined by a stock of ageing and obsolete weaponry.
A tri-service force, the TPDF consists of three distinct branches, the Land Force Command, the Naval Command, and the Air Force Command, with active-duty personnel totalling approximately 25 000.
With defence spending consistently near or above 1.1% of GDP, the force maintains a modest posture, benefitting from Chinese and US military assistance. In recent years, the TPDF has undertaken a gradual, albeit limited, modernisation programme across the Land, Naval, and Air Commands, acquiring military vehicles, patrol vessels, transport aircraft, and helicopters. In addition, foreign partners such as the US have provided training, boats, logistics vehicles, communications systems, and other hardware. While persistent budgetary pressures, ageing equipment, and limited force-projection capability continue to constrain the force’s overall effectiveness, the TPDF remains a credible and reliable contributor to regional and continental security operations.
