A Lifeline for Mothers in Chemalal
Kipkoech Ruto from Bomet has been named SportPesa’s Tujiamini Community Gold winner, earning KES 1 million to set up a maternity wing that will improve safe delivery services in his community.
Ruto, a Clinical Officer at Chemalal Dispensary in Konoin Constituency, applied after seeing the call for entries on social media. The father of three wanted to address a long-standing health challenge in Chemalal village, where expectant mothers struggle to access medical care.
Responding to a Community Need
For years, women have walked five to ten kilometers to reach the nearest health facility. This journey poses life-threatening risks, especially during night-time labour or emergency situations.
Ruto explains that mothers often deliver at home without skilled assistance, increasing the chances of complications. He has personally responded to many urgent calls to help with unsafe home deliveries.
He says the grant will enable him to establish a dedicated maternity wing at Chemalal Dispensary. The facility will offer safe delivery, emergency support, and postnatal care, helping reduce preventable maternal and infant deaths.
SportPesa’s Commitment to Community Impact
During the handover ceremony, Deborah Maina, Public Relations and Advertising Executive at SportPesa, praised Ruto’s vision. She noted that the Tujiamini platform supports individuals who are transforming their communities through practical solutions.
She added that his project will significantly improve healthcare outcomes for families in Chemalal.
About the Tujiamini Initiative
SportPesa has invested KES 30 million in this year’s Tujiamini programme. So far, more than 430 beneficiaries have received support through the gold, silver, and bronze categories.
The platform continues to empower Kenyans who are making meaningful contributions in their local communities.
