Born to scholar Mahmood Mamdani and filmmaker Mira Nair, New York’s new mayor, Zohran Mamdani, took his first breath in the capital city of Uganda, Kampala.

Reports dated hours ago now show that he is the first Democrat to win a mayoral election since current U.S. President Donald Trump began his second term.

Being African-born, and by extension, an immigrant, Zohran Mamdani now also ranks as the youngest person in over 100 years to assume the position of the Big Apple’s mayor.

At just 34, he would be put in charge of the U.S’s largest city in terms of population, and by some estimates, the world’s largest city in terms of GDP.

According to preliminary 2024 numbers from BEA, as seen in USA Today, New York has a nominal GDP $2.3 trillion, making it the third largest via this metric, behind Texas and California.

Zohran Mamdani was born in Kampala to scholar Mahmood Mamdani and film director Mira Nair. His family is of South Asian (Indian) heritage; they moved to Uganda, then Cape Town, before settling in New York City when he was seven.

Mamdani describes his childhood as comparably fortunate, although noting he grew politically aware of inequality in New York.

Mamdani’s cultural and political identities reflect his upbringing on multiple continents. He possesses dual citizenship in Uganda and the United States.

In 2025, he publicly announced his marriage to Rama Duwaji.

His background, Ugandan-born, South Asian heritage, Muslim, and raised in Africa and New York, has influenced both his public image and the discussions around his campaign.

It is also worth noting that Mamdani attended Bronx High School of Science but later majored in Africana Studies at Bowdoin College.

Zohran Mamdani’s race to become mayor of New York

Mamdani entered electoral politics in 2020, challenging five-term incumbent Aravella Simotas and winning the Democratic primary for the 36th Assembly District.

He assumed office in January 2021 and was reelected (often unopposed) in successive cycles.

In October 2024, he launched a high-profile campaign for mayor of New York City; his platform, based on progressive values and a revitalized youth organization, helped him win the 2025 Democratic primary, which many outlets hailed as an upset.
