New Health Units for Mothers and Newborns

Residents of Migori and Nyamira counties will now access improved maternal health care after M-Pesa Foundation invested KES 110 million in new health facilities.

In Migori, the Foundation spent KES 50 million on a modern Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (MNCH) unit at Awendo Sub-County Hospital.

The new unit includes a theatre for caesarean sections, delivery rooms, antenatal and postnatal wards, and a newborn unit with a kangaroo room. It also has consultation rooms, a pharmacy, and several support offices.

In Nyamira, the Foundation commissioned a KES 60 million MNCH unit at Nyamusi Sub-County Hospital.

This facility features antenatal and postnatal wards, a newborn unit, a kangaroo room, delivery rooms, a family planning room, and a theatre for caesarean cases.

Addressing Gaps in Rural Health Care

“Access to maternal health remains a challenge in rural areas,” said Nicholas Ng’ang’a, Chairman of M-Pesa Foundation. “We focus on maternal and child health to close these gaps. By working with county governments, we bring quality and affordable services closer to the communities that need them most.”

Previously, many mothers had to travel long distances to referral hospitals for safe delivery. As a result, emergency response was often delayed.

Awendo alone serves more than 142,000 people, while Nyamusi serves about 21,000. Both facilities record high numbers of deliveries and antenatal visits every month.

Nursing Officer Evelyne Alonde from Awendo welcomed the project. She said mothers will no longer be referred to faraway hospitals, which will improve emergency response and reduce deaths among mothers and newborns.

So far, Safaricom’s Foundations have invested over KES 105 million in health projects in Migori and Nyamira.

In addition, the projects have reached more than 300,000 people with better health services. With the new units, M-Pesa Foundation is restoring dignity and giving families hope during childbirth.
