The African Tax Research Network (ATRN) Congress is an annual event that brings together academics, tax officials, government officials, tax administrators, students, civil society organisations, policymakers, researchers, and tax practitioners from across Africa at a single setting. The first ATRN Congress took place in 2015. Since then, there have been over 835 research paper submissions and more than 440 papers presented. While the actual impact of the submissions and papers cannot be measured, it is important to note that the contributions made by the researchers and academics have profoundly affected the African continent.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the ATRN, and this year’s Congress will take place in Cape Town, South Africa, on 16–18 September 2025. Participants must expect a star-studded line up of tax experts as speakers from top universities and beyond who conduct their research on African tax systems. Following a call for papers, 150 research papers have been received, tackling various exciting and contemporary tax topics. The ATRN Scientific Committee is currently undertaking a double-blind peer review process and selected papers will be presented at the Congress.

Participants can look forward to a rich and diverse showcase of multidisciplinary research on African tax systems, presented in English, French, and Portuguese. The event will feature contemporary insights across tax policy, tax administration, and tax legislation. It also offers a unique platform for researchers and practitioners to enhance their capacity and share best practices in addressing tax challenges across the continent.

This year, the ATRN Congress aims to build on previous events by encouraging greater participation from young and experienced academics across the continent. Their knowledge in tax brings invaluable expertise to the academic space. Moreover, the ATRN Congress seeks to become a platform where academics from across the continent gather to present their research on contemporary tax issues. This initiative aligns with the ATRN’s objective to build a network of academics and tax researchers on the African continent by 2030.
