The Ghanaian government has reportedly appointed KPMG to advance plans to merge AT Ghana and Telecel in a bid to stem mounting losses from its acquisition of the former, while building a stronger rival to market leader MTN.

Bloomberg reported that AT Ghana continues to struggle financially after the government acquired the operator from Bharti Airtel and Millicom for just US$1 in 2021. Losses have already reached US$10 million in the first eight months of this year, according to Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Sam George.

Telecel Ghana, in which the government holds a 30% stake, is also underperforming as MTN Ghana maintains its dominance of the local telecoms market.

MTN Ghana currently serves almost 29.8 million mobile subscribers, giving it a commanding 73.8% market share. A combined AT–Telecel entity would count around 10.5 million subscribers.
