This marks the second time in recent months that the U.S. has raised alarms over security threats near military installations in Nigeria.
In May, the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, in an advisory, referenced the explosion near Mogadishu Barracks along the Mararaba-Nyanya bypass and urged citizens to avoid the area while police investigations were underway.
That incident was quickly followed by a June alert reiterating that U.S. citizens should avoid unnecessary travel to Nigerian military and government facilities due to escalating risks.
The latest advisory dated Sepember 2, 2025, links the restrictions to broader security concerns shaped by global developments, adding another layer of caution for both U.S. citizens and diplomatic staff in Nigeria.
The Embassy emphasized that the measure is preventative and aligns with ongoing efforts to safeguard American nationals and personnel in high-risk areas.
Recommended Safety Measures for U.S. Citizens
In its latest security alert, the U.S. Mission outlined several precautionary steps for Americans in Nigeria. Citizens are advised to stay alert in public areas, especially in venues often visited by Westerners, expatriates, and government officials.
The guidance further urges avoiding large gatherings, limiting unnecessary travel, and varying routes and times to reduce predictability.
The Mission also recommends that travelers familiarize themselves with emergency exits when entering buildings and review personal security plans regularly to ensure readiness. These measures, officials noted, are critical given the heightened risks around military and government facilities in Abuja and other sensitive locations.
Nigeria Dismisses Alarm, Says Capital Remains Safe
Following previous U.S. security advisory, the Nigerian government sought to reassure the public insisting that Abuja remains safe for citizens and visitors.
Responding to the June alert from the U.S. Mission, Information Minister Mohammed Idris said the government had noted the advisory but stressed there was no cause for concern.
“The Federal Government of Nigeria has taken note of the latest security advisory issued by the Embassy of the United States, restricting its staff and their families from non-official travel to military sites or other government facilities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja,” Idris stated.
He emphasized that while Nigeria respects the right of foreign missions to issue advisories to their citizens, “it is important to state categorically that Abuja remains safe for citizens, residents, and visitors alike.”
The minister further assured that security agencies are working tirelessly to protect residents across the FCT and the country.
