Nigerian indigenous oil and gas company, Seplat Energy Plc, has supplied its first cargo of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) for domestic use from the Bonny River Terminal in Rivers State into Nigeria’s market.
The oil firm made this disclosure in an official statement on Friday, adding that the project includes its joint venture (JV) partner, Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).
According to the statement, a total of 12,600 metric tons of LPG was loaded for the Nigerian market, the first time cargo from the terminal will not be exported.
The supply is expected to reduce the country’s dependence on gas importation, and it also marks a shift of local utilization since Seplat takes over the assets from ExxonMobil in December 2024.
Since the $1.2 billion acquisition of the assets, Seplat now serves as the primary operator of ExxonMobil’s stakes in Oil Mining Leases (OMLs) 67, 68, 70, and 104 in southeast offshore Nigeria.

Accordingly, the company’s Chief Executive Officer, Roger Brown, said the development reflects Seplat’s long term strategy of supporting domestic gas supply.
He added that the company currently operates three gas processing plants, which form part of its plan to expand access to cleaner cooking fuel across the country.
“As indigenous companies, we have to create energy security within Nigeria and invest for the next 50 years and beyond.
“At Seplat we have always believed that domestic gas would be very critical. Today, we are seeing a shift where energy security is being created locally,” Brown said.
Currently, Seplat covers around 10% of Nigeria’s total LPG consumption of around 1.3 million MT, indicating a meaningful contribution to local supply.
Future projects to boost local supply
Moreover, Seplat noted that its upcoming gas facilities are equipped with LPG units that will further strengthen domestic supply.
The 300 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd) ANOH gas plant in Imo State and the 90 MMscfd Sapele gas plant in Delta State are expected to be operational in the fourth quarter of 2025.
When completed, the ANOH plant will produce about 120 metric tons of LPG daily, while the Sapele facility will deliver about 163 metric tons per day.
“With these facilities, we will increase the availability of locally sourced LPG, improve energy access for Nigerians, and reduce emissions from traditional cooking fuels still used by millions of households,” Brown explained.
He noted that the use of LPG reduces air pollution and carbon emissions compared with firewood and kerosene, which remain common in many homes.
Industry data show that over 80% of Nigerian households still rely on biomass and other traditional fuels for cooking.
This has led to deforestation, indoor pollution, and health risks for families.
By expanding LPG availability, Seplat said it is supporting the Federal Government’s policy of achieving energy sufficiency while promoting a gradual shift to cleaner fuels.
