Carrefour Donates KES 6.9M Sanitation Facility to Mutuini School

Funded Through the “Round Up Your Bill” Initiative

Carrefour, which operates in Kenya under Majid Al Futtaim, has officially handed over a KES 6.9 million sanitation facility to Mutuini Primary School in Dagoretti, Nairobi.

The entire project was funded through the retailer’s Round Up Your Bill initiative. It aims to promote hygiene and create a healthier, more inclusive learning environment for over 860 students and teachers.

The newly constructed ablution block includes 30 modern sanitary units and several handwashing sinks. As a result, learners now enjoy access to clean, safe hygiene facilities.

This intervention not only fills a critical infrastructure gap but also supports better attendance and improved academic performance.

Advancing Health and Learning Through Community Action

According to Christophe Orcet, Regional Director – East Africa at Majid Al Futtaim Retail, lack of sanitation remains a major challenge:

“One in three schools in Kenya faces serious sanitation issues, which contribute to preventable illnesses and lower learning outcomes. We believe the private sector has a responsibility to respond to such needs.”

Moreover, Orcet emphasized the power of collaboration:

“The Round Up Your Bill initiative demonstrates the real impact that is possible when customers and businesses work together. We are proud to have supported the students and teachers at Mutuini Primary School in this way.”

Transforming the Learning Environment

George Njenga, Head Teacher at Mutuini Primary School, expressed deep gratitude:

“This facility is life-changing for our pupils. They now have access to clean toilets and proper handwashing stations, which are essential for their health and dignity. We sincerely thank Carrefour and all the customers who made this happen.”

Through the Round Up Your Bill programme, customers voluntarily round up their purchases at checkout. The extra funds go toward local development initiatives across Kenya.

Ultimately, this effort is part of Majid Al Futtaim’s broader sustainability strategy, which focuses on improving education, health, and community wellbeing.
