Google Announces $37M AI Investment and New Community Center in Accra

Google https://www.google.com/ has unveiled a significant $37 million funding commitment to boost artificial intelligence (AI) development across Africa. The investment combines new funding and previously unannounced support.

It targets key areas including research, infrastructure, talent development, and inclusive innovation.

A standout element of the announcement is the launch of the AI Community Center in Accra, Ghana. This first-of-its-kind facility is designed to promote AI learning, experimentation, and collaboration.

It will host training programs, workshops, and community events focusing on AI literacy, social impact, technology, and creative expression.

This announcement reflects Google’s broader strategy to ensure AI tools are relevant to African needs. The programs will address food security, local language access, startup development, and digital skills.

Driving AI for Food, Language, and Startups

To strengthen food systems, Google.org is investing $25 million in the AI Collaborative for Food Security.

This multi-partner initiative will unite researchers and nonprofits to create AI tools for early hunger detection, crop resilience, and support for smallholder farmers. The goal is to build food systems that are more adaptive and fair in the face of climate and economic challenges.

In addition, Google is providing $3 million to the Masakhane Research Foundation, which leads open research on AI for over 40 African languages.

This funding will help build better datasets, translation models, and speech tools. As a result, millions of Africans will gain better access to digital content in their native languages.

To boost innovation, Google is also launching a catalytic funding initiative for more than 100 early-stage AI startups.

These startups, working in fields such as healthcare, agriculture, and education, will receive funding, mentorship, and access to technical tools. The aim is to help them grow responsibly while solving real-world problems.

Scaling Talent, Education, and Research

To meet the growing demand for digital skills, Google is offering 100,000 fully funded Career Certificate scholarships to university students in Ghana.

The self-paced programs include AI Essentials, Prompting, IT Support, Data Analytics, and Cybersecurity. This initiative will equip more learners with the skills needed for today’s digital economy.

Beyond Ghana, Google.org is committing an additional $7 million to expand AI education across Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, and Ghana. The funding will support universities and nonprofits building localized AI curricula, as well as training in cybersecurity and online safety.

To deepen academic research, Google.org has awarded two $1 million research grants. One goes to the African Institute for Data Science and AI (AfriDSAI) at the University of Pretoria.

The other supports the Wits MIND Institute in South Africa. Both institutions will fund MSc and PhD students conducting foundational AI research and strengthening Africa’s influence in the global AI landscape.

• AI-powered maternal health dashboards in Ghana and Nigeria,

• Wildfire alert systems in East Africa, and

• Regional language model development by teams in Accra and Nairobi.
