Wangari Mwangi: Shaking Up Luxury Spirits with Kenyan Flair
From bartending for tuition to leading Diageo’s luxury portfolio, Wangari’s journey is a bold cocktail of grit, grace, and global ambition.
When Wangari Mwangi first stepped behind the bar, it wasn’t for passion; it was for survival. “I needed to raise money to pay for my college education,” she recalls.
After her father withdrew support, she joined an agency promoting energy drinks in bars. When sales dipped, the team pivoted to cocktails.
“I was the only one curious enough to learn mixology. That’s how I got the job.” She learned on the fly, was trained by an expert, and sharpened her skills on the job. That first cocktail became the gateway to a remarkable career.
Her path to Diageo began with admiration. “I met the Diageo team while bartending and admired their swag and passion,” she says.
Later, while working for business mogul Chris Kirubi, she was exposed to the world of luxury.
“Chris worked hard and played harder. I saw firsthand that luxury wasn’t just expensive, it was intentional.”
From custom car interiors to designer wardrobes, Wangari discovered the beauty in detail, craftsmanship, and curated experiences.
“That’s what inspired me. So when the opportunity at Diageo came, it felt like the natural next step.”
Bringing Tanqueray to Life
Among the standout spirits Wangari represents is Tanqueray, a gin with a heritage as rich as its flavor profile.
Founded in 1830 by Charles Tanqueray, the brand is a symbol of classic British gin making.
“Tanqueray is not just a drink, it’s a brand with a soul crafted with intention, heritage, and precision.”
It is known for its crisp, juniper-forward profile and versatility in cocktails.
Tanqueray No. TEN, distilled with fresh citrus fruits and botanicals, is perfect for a premium martini.
Infused with bittersweet orange, Tanqueray Flor de Sevilla, appeals to those starting their gin journey.
Wangari knows how to match each expression with her audience.
“Whether it’s a CEO who prefers a dry martini or a young professional enjoying their first G&T at brunch, there’s a Tanqueray for that moment,” she says.
Her favourite? The Tanqueray Basil Smash, a fresh, citrusy cocktail that pairs beautifully with seafood.
“It’s elegant, refreshing, and a little unexpected, just like luxury should be.”
She also once went by the Instagram handle ‘Wangari Tanqueray’, which helped drive fun, memorable brand connection. “It became bigger than I’d expected.”
Living the Brand, Leading the Culture
As Diageo’s Reserve Brand Ambassador, Wangari’s role is anything but ordinary.
“One day I’m hosting a mixology workshop, the next I’m on a flight for an international competition,” she says.
The only constant? Staying adaptable. “You need flexibility, and a spare outfit in your car!”
What she values most is the ability to shape brand experiences.
“Diageo’s luxury portfolio has incredible stories, world-class quality, and a global outlook.
It’s exciting to be part of what the future of luxury drinking experiences looks like.”
For Kenya’s high net worth individuals, Wangari curates bespoke moments.
“It starts with understanding their expectations and aligning with the right brand.
It’s about pairing the right occasion with the right liquid.”
For her, luxury is defined by purpose and intention, not price.
“It’s in the craft, the detail, the setting, and the atmosphere.
It’s a gin cocktail served with local ingredients at a curated event. Its elegance is rooted in authenticity.”

Breaking Barriers with Grit and Grace
Wangari’s success hasn’t come without challenges.
“My dad was my first obstacle. He didn’t think bartending was a respectable career choice for a young woman.”
But her determination paid off. “Eventually, he came around. Now I even teach him how to make the perfect G&T.”
More over, working in a male-dominated industry means proving yourself constantly.
“But I grew up around boys. Competition doesn’t scare me, losing does.”
Kenya’s gin culture, she says, is thriving. “It’s no longer just about drinking, it’s about experience.”
Tanqueray has played a key role in elevating this. “Even the bottle is shaped like a cocktail shaker. It’s made for mixing.”
Travel, Purpose, and a Luxury Outlook
Travel fuels Wangari’s creativity and sense of purpose.
Seeing how different cultures approach drinking reshaped how I view the industry.
In Australia, for example, selling bottles at clubs is illegal to promote responsible drinking. That inspired me to champion moderation here at home.”
Her most inspiring destination? Shanghai.
“Their commitment to excellence left a lasting impression.”
Additionally, as a woman in luxury, Wangari defines power as quiet confidence.
“It’s about knowing your worth and leading with authenticity. That’s what people respond to.”
Her advice to women entering luxury or lifestyle spaces?
“Don’t try to blend in. Bring your full story. That’s your edge.”
The Future of African Luxury
Wangari believes African women are shaping global luxury trends.
“We’re blending heritage with modernity. And the world is watching.”
From fine dining that spotlights indigenous ingredients to African-led design, she sees the continent leading with authenticity and pride.
“What excites me most is that we’re defining luxury on our terms.”
Daily Inspiration
What keeps her going? The women around her.
“I’m inspired by trailblazers like Wangari Maathai, ethical fashion creatives like Anyango Mpinga, and corporate giants like Jane Karuku.”
And at a personal level, her sister and aunt. “They strive for progress and excellence. Their resilience and heart remind me of where I come from, and where I’m going.”
