Former Juventus president Andrea Agnelli handed 16-month ban and fined over salary manoeuvres

Former Juventus president Andrea Agnelli has been banned from football for a further 16 months and fined €60,000 following a case into salary manoeuvres during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The 47-year-old received the sanction from the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) at a hearing on Monday, with the proceedings concerning salary manoeuvres, relations with agents and partnerships with other clubs.

Agnelli was already serving a two-year ban for alleged financial malpractice following a capital gains case in January.

He had agreed to stand trial after not entering a plea bargain in May, when Juventus accepted a fine of €718,000 as part of a plea bargain that the club, and other past and present directors, struck with the FIGC to bring an end to the sporting penalties for financial malpractice in Italy.

That verdict in May drew a line under the scandal and allowed Juventus and the FIGC to move on without further sporting sanctions, such as the club starting next season with a points deduction.

It remains to be seen what bearing this might have on UEFA’s own investigation into potential breaches of club licensing and financial fair play. As it stands, Juventus’ seventh-place finish in Serie A would see them qualify for next season’s Conference League qualifiers. However, UEFA could still ban the club from European competitions.
