Italian oil major, Eni, will increase gas production in Ghana starting Sunday to raise domestic supply by 30 million standard cubic feet per day (scf/d), the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition announced on Thursday.

The decision, which takes effect on July 13, 2025, will boost the nation’s total supply to 270 million scf/d.

The ministry’s spokesperson and head of communication, Richmond Rockson, noted in a statement that the move is part of broader efforts to stabilize energy supply across the country.

He added that the temporary export halt was essential to ensure the success of the planned supply increase.

“Eni will temporarily suspend gas exports to boost domestic supply by 30 million scf/d, bringing total supply to 270 million scf/d,” Rockson stated. “This strategic step is crucial for strengthening our energy infrastructure and guaranteeing a reliable supply for citizens.”

According to Rockson, the decision to suspend exports may affect gas availability for power generation during the transition period.

However, the ministry, in collaboration with power sector stakeholders, has activated contingency plans to minimize the potential impact.

“We have proactively implemented measures to monitor power generation closely and keep any disruption to a minimum,” Rockson added. “Our aim is to manage this transition smoothly and avoid significant interruptions.”

He explained that part of the strategy includes working with distribution companies, generation companies, and other operators to maintain consistent power delivery despite reduced gas exports.

Eni’s decision to channel more gas into the local market aligns with Ghana’s national plans to boost domestic energy consumption and reduce reliance on external markets.

Rockson mentioned that this approach supports long term goals for energy independence and economic resilience.

“This measure is not only about meeting today’s demand but also about laying the groundwork for a more stable and secure energy future,” he added in the statement.

The measures include enhanced monitoring of power generation and contingency plans to ensure minimal impact on power supply.
