Buddy Hield. Deandre Ayton. More and more NBA players are coming from The Bahamas, and now the country has another budding star: VJ Edgecombe, who was just selected with the third overall pick in the NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers.

Edgecombe, who was born and raised on the island of Bimini, is the second-highest-ever Bahamian draft pick, following Ayton, who was selected number one overall in 2018.

Edgecombe, a shooting guard who grew up shooting hoops on the seaside courts of Bimini, was one of the highest recruits in last year’s class before playing for Baylor University.

The 6’5’’ guard is likely to get significant playing time with the Sixers.

“VJ’s journey from Bimini to becoming the 3rd overall pick in the NBA Draft is nothing short of incredible,” Bahamas Prime Minister Philip Davis said Wednesday evening. “It shows our young people that the dream is real, the path is possible, and that greatness can rise from anywhere in our country.”

The Bahamas continues to make waves on the international sporting stage, with a growing pipeline of stars across the major sports, including current New York Yankees star infielder Jazz Chisholm.

Davis said he and his wife Ann joined the “entire Bahamas in celebrating this moment and praying God’s continued blessings on your journey.”

As Davis said, “242 to the world!”
