Rosatom Showcases Floating Nuclear Technologies at Enlit Africa 2025
Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation displayed advanced nuclear solutions at Enlit Africa 2025, held from May 20 to 22 in Cape Town, South Africa. The event attracted energy leaders and government officials from across the continent, including South Africa, Ghana, Tanzania, and Kenya.
At the Rosatom stand, visitors experienced a multimedia display of floating power unit (FPU) technologies. The exhibit also featured a model of the RITM-200 reactor and a demonstration of in-situ uranium recovery. This method uses borehole-injected solvents to dissolve uranium from underground ore, reducing the environmental impact.
A key highlight was the panel discussion, “80 Years of Russian Nuclear Legacy: Powering Africa’s Sustainable Future with Floating Nuclear Units”, held on May 21. Speakers included Sengiphile Simelane of NECSA, Katse Maphoto from South Africa’s Department of Electricity and Energy, Dr. Robert Sogbadji from Ghana’s Ministry of Energy, and Vladimir Aptekarev from Rosatom.
During the discussion, experts explored how floating nuclear units can bridge energy gaps in areas with limited infrastructure. These units are portable and adaptable, making them ideal for coastal cities and remote locations. Vladimir Aptekarev stated that floating power units offer a clean, stable, and scalable energy source suited to Africa’s diverse needs.

Rosatom Emphasizes Partnership and Innovation
This year marks two major anniversaries: 80 years of Russia’s nuclear industry and 60 years of South Africa’s SAFARI-1 research reactor. These milestones reflect decades of cooperation in peaceful nuclear development.
Vadim Titov, Director General of the Rosatom International Network and head of the delegation, emphasized Africa’s importance to Rosatom. He noted: “Rosatom leads in safe, peaceful nuclear innovation. Our solutions are flexible and sustainable. Together with African partners, we’re helping to reshape the region’s energy future.”
Rosatom continues to promote long-term partnerships across Africa. In addition, its technology supports energy security, sustainability, and economic development. The company aims to help African nations diversify their energy mix while lowering carbon emissions.
