Oil exploration firm, Tullow Ghana, has commenced a fresh drilling campaign in the Jubilee Field, marking the start of a two year programme expected to improve production and operational efficiency.

The company said the operation, which begins in May 2025 and extends into 2026, signals renewed confidence in Ghana’s offshore energy sector.

This development comes after the successful completion of a four year drilling project in December 2024, which saw the delivery of 18 wells six months ahead of schedule and under budget.

According to the firm, the previous campaign was commended for its efficiency, safety track record and cost control.

The latest drilling activity will unfold in phases, with a second round expected to begin in November.

Managing Director of Tullow Ghana, Jean Médard Madama, said the company’s return to the Jubilee Field is an important step in strengthening its presence in Ghana.

“This is an exciting moment for us. The restart of drilling reflects another milestone in our journey in Ghana and shows our confidence in the country’s resource base,” he said.

“Even as the field matures, we are confident in its capacity to deliver value for our shareholders, partners, and the people of Ghana.”

The Jubilee Field, located off the coast of western Ghana, remains one of the most productive oil fields in West Africa.

Tullow and its partners believe that even as the site enters a mature phase, it still holds significant potential to generate revenue and sustain national output levels.

Earlier this year, Tullow concluded a 16-day maintenance activity at the Jubilee Field in preparation for the new drilling campaign.

The maintenance included upgrades aimed at reducing operational risks and improving safety.

Performance driven operations

Tullow Ghana stated that lessons from the previous drilling phase would be applied to optimise delivery during the current campaign.

It also noted that the project aligns with the company’s broader strategic goal of maintaining strong returns in key assets through disciplined operations.

In addition, Industry analysts have reported that the Jubilee Field continues to be a major contributor to Ghana’s oil production targets, and this new drilling effort could further stabilise production levels in the medium term.

Tullow is the lead operator in the Jubilee partnership, which also includes Kosmos Energy, Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), Ghana Oil Company (GOIL), and PetroSA.

The Jubilee Field was first discovered in 2007 and began production in late 2010.
