Absa Life Roots for the Future with 10,000 Mangroves

A Community-Led Push for Coastal Resilience

Absa Life Assurance Kenya has launched a major mangrove reforestation drive in Tsunza, Kwale County, by planting 10,000 mangrove trees.

The initiative is a joint effort with local community groups, the Kenya Forest Service (KFS), Kenya Defense Forces (KDF), and environmental partners including Furaha and Bakara Farms. It is part of Absa Life’s broader strategy to address environmental degradation and improve community resilience in coastal areas.

More than 100 people took part in the planting session, including government officials, farmers, and community leaders. Once mature, the mangroves will cover nearly 10 hectares of shoreline.

Mangroves are powerful carbon sinks. According to the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), they can absorb up to four times more carbon than tropical rainforests. They also help reduce storm damage, prevent coastal erosion, and support marine life critical to local fishing economies.

Sustainability That Goes Beyond Planting

Elseba Asinati, Head of Sustainability at Absa Life, said the initiative is about showing up for both people and the planet. “In Tsunza, we are seeing the cost of environmental change firsthand,” she said. “This is one way we’re responding—by restoring a system that supports food, income, and safety for this community.”

The project includes every stage of the reforestation cycle: seed collection, nursery care, planting, and long-term monitoring. All of it is done with local participation. This has already created new income opportunities for families who are helping care for the young trees.

Absa Life Managing Director and Principal Officer, Mr. Githanji Waiguru, said the company views this as part of its core responsibility. “As an insurer, we’re in the business of protecting futures. Climate risk is now one of the biggest threats. We must act,” he said. “We’re not just talking about resilience—we’re investing in it.”

The company also announced plans to expand tree-planting efforts across Kenya. It will partner with schools and learning institutions to grow environmental awareness and impact beyond the coast.
