China has begun using the artificial intelligence (AI) platform DeepSeek to support the design of new military aircraft, the South China Morning Post reported.

Chinese startup DeepSeek is positioned as a cost-effective alternative solution competing with US tech companies.

“The technology has already shown promising potential” and provided “new ideas and approaches for future aerospace research and development,” said Wang Yongqing, lead designer at the Chinese Shenyang Aircraft Design Institute, part of the state-owned Aviation Industry Corporation of China.

The institute, which focuses on developing advanced fighter jets such as the J-15 and J-35, uses AI to reduce routine tasks and allow developers to focus on key design work.

The development of fighter jets is a crucial milestone in Beijing’s defense sector.

Last year, China reportedly completed the maiden flight of its sixth-generation fighter aircraft, a significant step in its efforts to challenge the US’s edge in air combat systems.

While specific details remain undisclosed, the aircraft’s double-delta wing design suggests optimization for supersonic speeds, and it is expected to feature advanced stealth capabilities to enhance its radar evasion.

Expanding AI Solutions

Beijing is rapidly adopting DeepSeek across multiple sectors.

The AI tool’s large language models are being deployed in Chinese military healthcare to assist doctors with treatment plans, support psychological counselling for soldiers, and help troops with physical training, local news reported.

Future uses in defense could include integrating AI to enhance combat performance, improve the effectiveness of drone swarm tactics, increase the realism and efficiency of pilot training, and support decision-making on the battlefield.
