German tech company Quantum Systems has signed a deal to supply the Spanish Armed Forces with mid-range reconnaissance drones.

Under the framework agreement, Madrid is set to receive 91 Vector unmanned aircraft vehicles (UAV). The intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) package will comprise 182 drones, and will be used to bolster the force’s endurance, reliability, and mission flexibility.

All Vector initial missions will be under the Spanish Army and the Spanish Marine Infantry.

Additionally, the Spanish Air Force will receive multiple Twister units, acquired to improve the fleet’s short-range reconnaissance capabilities for highly dynamic missions.

Delivery of the Vector and Twister drones will begin later this year.

Quantum Systems’ Drones

The Vector mid-range drone is an electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft with open architecture, allowing it to easily be upgraded and expand its capabilities and functionality.

It has a command and control range exceeding 38.2 miles (60 kilometers), with a flight endurance of 35 minutes and a maximum take-off weight of 18 pounds (8 kilograms).

Its operators include Australia, New Zealand, and Ukraine, with the latter receiving an updated sensor system for its units last year to allow operations in Global Navigation Satellite System-denied environments.

The Twister UAV uses EO/IR sensors for real-time situational awareness, while also using its eVTOL features for covert launches from concealed locations and confined spaces.

It is also capable of updating its operating systems via over-the-air software upgrades, ensuring it operates with top-of-the-line architecture.
