The construction of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is set to be completed by January 2026, according to the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi.
Umahi shared this information during an inspection of the highway on Wednesday.
“We came to assess the project alongside the financial backers – Dutch Bank and the Development Bank of Southern Africa,” he stated.
He noted that it is expected that 20 kilometers of the road, starting from Ahmadu Bello Way in Lagos, will be finished by May.
“We aim to exceed the 20 kilometers from this site,” he added.
Umahi also mentioned that over 70 percent of the entire project has been completed.
“Let me emphasize that this project is more than 70 percent finished, yet the contractor has not received funding equivalent to that percentage,” he explained. “This is why I commend them for their commitment to nation-building rather than just profit.”
He noted that along the corridor, land has been acquired for tourism, industry, factories, and housing developments.
“These are the road designs you can expect on this highway.
“I assure you that, God willing, we will complete this road by January next year,” the minister stated.
He mentioned that the financial backers of the highway are pleased with the progress, quality, methods, and all aspects of the project.
He commended Hitech Construction Company, the contractor responsible for the project, for their efforts.
“The road is exceptionally well-designed from a technical standpoint.
“The concrete thickness is specified at 275 millimeters, but they are actually using 280 millimeters.
“I also want to acknowledge the Department of Bridge and Roads, as well as the controller of works in Lagos, for their contributions,” he added.
Mr. Umahi expressed that his main concern would be motorists merging onto the highway from their homes.
“This is going to be a significant issue, so we need to create a barrier.
“I understand that you’re planning to build a retaining wall, but it hasn’t been included throughout the entire area.”
