Natural gas is quickly becoming one of the world’s most important energy sources, bridging the gap between fossil fuels and renewables.

In the absence of indigenous natural gas production, governments are compelled to import petroleum products or rely on hydroelectric power, which is unpredictable owing to climatic unpredictability.

Natural gas is a vital resource for sectors such as fertilizer manufacture, cement, steel, and petrochemicals. In nations with poor natural gas output, a shortage of inexpensive and accessible energy stifles the growth of such enterprises.

This reduces employment creation, delays economic diversification, and reinforces reliance on imports.

Industrialization is necessary for value creation and economic resilience, both of which are limited without a stable energy foundation.

African Countries with low natural gas output may have a challenge in recruiting companies, industrial investments, and regional alliances.

Their subpar energy infrastructure may also make it difficult to join in cross-border power pools or energy-sharing agreements, cutting them out of larger economic benefits.

Natural gas is viewed as a cleaner transitional fuel that can aid in the move from coal and oil to renewable energy sources.

For African countries that generate little natural gas, the shift is more challenging. Without inexpensive, low-emission energy sources, many nations may continue to rely on polluting fuels or struggle to incorporate renewable energy into inefficient systems.

This affects their capacity to fulfill climate targets and obtain international climate financing.

With that said, below are the African countries with the lowest production of natural gas in 2025, according to data from Global Firepower, an online portal that provides analytic data concerning global military power.

PS: This list does not include countries that do not produce natural gas at all, but those that produce the smallest amount in Africa.
