NATO has completed the acquisition of the Maven Smart System (MSS NATO), an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered capability developed by Palantir.

Finalized on March 25, the acquisition was carried out by the NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCIA) in collaboration with Palantir and Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), underscoring the alliance’s commitment to rapid innovation and technological superiority.

The system enables commanders to securely deploy advanced AI tools in military operations. By providing a shared, data-driven capability across the alliance, it supports intelligence fusion, targeting, situational awareness, planning, and faster decision-making.

Ludwig Decamps, General Manager of NCIA, said the organization was pleased to team up with SHAPE and Palantir. MSS NATO, he added, empowers “our forces with the tools required on the modern battlefield to operate effectively and decisively.”

Shon Manasco, Senior Counselor at Palantir, called the collaboration a testament to NATO’s drive to lead with innovation.

“We’re proud to support NATO’s drive to bolster deterrence by deploying an AI-enabled warfighting platform at SHAPE. This partnership underlines the Alliance’s determination to lead fearlessly with technological innovation,” he said.

Accelerating Technology

Through MSS NATO, SHAPE also aims to accelerate the adoption of other emerging capabilities being developed across the alliance, including next-gen AI models and advanced modeling and simulation tools.

The procurement was one of the fastest in NATO’s history, completed in just six months from initial requirement to acquisition.

Allied Command Operations is expected to begin using the system within 30 days.
