The United States Trade Representative (USTR) expressed concern over Nigeria’s long-standing import restrictions, which limit market access for American exporters, particularly in sectors such as agriculture, pharmaceuticals, beverages, and consumer goods.

A list of banned items provided by Nigeria’s Customs Services reveals that several key American exports, including beef, pork, poultry, fruit juices, pharmaceutical products, and alcoholic beverages, are affected by the ban.

The USTR strongly criticized these restrictions, arguing that they unfairly limit access to Nigeria’s expanding consumer market, thereby diminishing potential revenue streams for U.S. producers, especially those in the agricultural and pharmaceutical sectors.

In response, the U.S. imposed a 14% tariff on Nigerian goods—a move Nigeria says could lead to potential trade disruptions.

The USTR emphasized that the ban on these 25 product categories significantly impacts U.S. exporters, reducing opportunities for trade and undermining the economic potential of both nations.

As the dispute escalates, the future of U.S.-Nigeria trade relations remains uncertain, with both sides facing increasing pressure to address the issue.

Nigeria-US trade figures

The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative reports that total goods trade between the U.S. and Nigeria reached $9. billion in 2024, with U.S. exports surging 61.4% to $4.2 billion, a significant increase of $1.6 billion compared to 2023.

Conversely, U.S. imports from Nigeria only increased by 0.1% to $5.7 billion, a modest $7.0 million rise.

As a result, the U.S. goods trade deficit with Nigeria narrowed by 50.9%, or $1.6 billion, to $1.5 billion.

This shift highlights the growing potential for U.S. exports to Nigeria, despite ongoing trade tensions and restrictions.

The substantial growth in U.S. exports and the narrowing of the trade deficit underscore the evolving dynamics in the trade relationship between the two countries.

Trump’s tariff war

The Trump administration has recently implemented significant tariff measures targeting several countries including African nations, aiming to address perceived trade imbalances and protect U.S. industries.

These actions have prompted varied responses from the affected countries, while the U.S. government has defended its stance, arguing that the tariffs are necessary to protect the U.S. against countries that have imposed similar restrictions on American goods.

Analysts suggest that the U.S. has adopted aggressive protectionist measures, which have sparked retaliatory actions from countries like China, Brazil, and increasingly, nations across Africa.

This evolving trade conflict puts U.S.-Nigeria relations, in particular, in a delicate position and If unresolved, the dispute could lead to broader regional pushback against U.S. trade policies in Africa, complicating efforts to maintain strong economic partnerships on the continent.

It remains to be seen how African countries will respond to the development, but Zimbabwe’s recent decision to eliminate all tariffs on U.S. goods—aimed at avoiding Trump’s sweeping tariffs—could set a precedent.

While the move may help ease U.S. restrictions on Zimbabwean exports, it could also prompt other African nations to consider similar strategies to protect their trade interests.
