The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the M23 rebels are set to hold direct peace talks on April 9 in Doha, the capital of Qatar. This development marks a significant step toward resolving one of Africa’s most devastating conflicts. The meeting, facilitated by Qatar, is the first direct negotiation between the parties involved in the conflict in eastern Congo. The talks will focus on several issues, including the withdrawal of rebels from occupied territories, their reintegration, and broader regional security. The Qatar-mediated meeting is the latest in a series of efforts—including the Nairobi and Luanda processes—aimed at ending the conflict. However, the fact that it is a direct negotiation differs from previous efforts, which were indirect.
