Rallying Support for Water Access

World Vision Kenya (WVK), through the Inuka Angaza Fund, successfully hosted the Less Steps for Water Run at its National Office in Karen, Nairobi.

The event united colleagues, partners, families, children, and supporters to address water scarcity in Salgaa, Nakuru County. The goal was to expand clean water access to six schools, improving children’s health, education, and well-being.

The Daily Struggle for Water

Children in Salgaa walk up to six kilometers daily to fetch water. This long journey often forces them to miss school. They also face constant exposure to waterborne diseases like cholera, dysentery, diarrhea, and typhoid.

A Sustainable Solution

Since June 2021, WVK, through the Inuka Angaza Fund, has been implementing long-term solutions to combat poverty and water insecurity. Progress is evident, thanks to partnerships with Nakuru County, KenGen, corporate donors, and well-wishers.

Achievements So Far

  • 695 children at Mimwaita and Gicheha Primary Schools now have clean water, allowing them to focus on learning.
  • Two 30,000-litre rainwater harvesting tanks ensure a reliable water supply.
  • The Umoja Water Project now provides safe drinking water to over 2,000 people within a 30-minute round trip.

Changing Lives Through Collective Action

“These initiatives have greatly improved hygiene, health, and learning conditions,” said Gilbert Kamanga, National Director of World Vision Kenya. “The Less Steps for Water Run is more than just a fundraiser—it’s about changing lives. The funds raised today will help provide clean water to six more schools, ensuring fewer children in Salgaa have to walk long distances in search of water.”

Expanding Water Access to the Community

The Umoja Water Project, in collaboration with the County Government of Nakuru, has transformed water accessibility.

  • 2,079 people now access clean drinking water within a 30-minute round trip.
  • Kayanet Primary School and Umoja ECD now have clean water, benefiting 390 children.
  • A modern automated water kiosk at the borehole site makes clean water more readily available.
  • An 8km pipeline distribution network, funded by Nakuru County, has expanded water access to homes, schools, and early childhood development centers.

Commitment to Long-Term Development

WVK, through the Inuka Angaza Fund, is also building a Community Resource Centre at Belbur Primary School. This center will feature computers and a library to promote digital literacy. It will also provide life skills training, mentorship, and counseling services for adolescents, youth, and women.

Gratitude for Support

“WVK extends its heartfelt gratitude to all participants, sponsors, and partners who made today’s event a success,” said Dr. David Githanga, Board Chair, World Vision Kenya.

“Your support ensures more children in Salgaa have access to safe water, quality education, and a healthier future. Together, we have taken fewer steps for water so the children of Salgaa can too.”
