President Daniel Chapo has met opposition leader Venâncio Mondlane for the first time since he was declared the winner of the presidential election in October. Mondlane had disputed the election’s result, accusing Chapo’s party of rigging the vote. He had then led nationwide protests, which sparked violent unrest that left at least 361 dead, mostly from police action. The unrest deepened Mozambique’s economic troubles, with S&P Global Ratings downgrading the country to “selective default” after a distressed debt swap. The meeting, held in Maputo, aimed to find solutions to the country’s growing challenges, marking a major step toward easing political tensions. The presidency described the dialogue as a move toward unity and collective progress in the gas-rich nation.
